Have Fun, Get Fit and Raise Money..…
Kayak EuropAfrica is an organisation that raises money for the
Butterfly Children Charity. Butterfly children suffer with very delicate skin and the parents are the carriers of this gene, 1 in 27 of us can be carriers so it can really happen to anyone.
Evanina Makow is the Director of the Butterfly Children Charity and Guy Leleu is the Sporting Director of the event. The event is to kayak across the straight from Tarifa in Spain as the bird flies – the shortest distance across the Mediterranean to Morocco, Africa. This is a unique event as it has never been done before with sea kayaks which are bigger and even though they are more stable, they are also slower.
People supporting this cause are doing so by either physically crossing the straight and getting their own sponsorship to do so, donating to the cause, sponsoring someone else who is crossing the straight and companies can sponsor by putting their company logo on the site.
This training day is an essential part to the event as each individual needs to know that they are capable of crossing the straight in their own health and fitness levels. The difficulties that could be encountered on the events´ day are
– The prevailing winds and tides can make the journey longer and more strenuous,
– The crossing is a busy shipping lane!
– Wildlife likes to get involved with charity work too! The dolphins and whales often come into play around the boats. So Kayaker’s had better beware as ´Flipper´ might come along to play and tip you over!!!
The rough guide of the crossing time as mentioned by Guy is around 4 hours but all of the above could make this longer.
