When it comes to rural retreats in southern Spain, the Guesthouse los Pastores is definitely one of the best, and most famous. It is situated just three kilometres south of Ronda, itself a famous historic town located an hour’s drive north of Marbella (though a newly-constructed road will reduce that journey time substantially).
Los Pastores guest house is a family run rural hotel, with buildings that date back to 1938. Many of the outbuildings of the original farm there (like the stables for example) have been converted into luxurious, yet rustic accommodation for guests. And although the farming aspect has long-since been removed, the equestrian tradition continues though, and any guests who want to experience horse-riding can enquire on arrival for specialist excursions. As the grounds of the guest house cover a huge area (some 200,000 km) countryside activities are extensive, ranging from the aforementioned horse-riding, to rambling, canyoning and hiking.
There are also hidden caves and lakes to discover, all surrounded by the Andalucian mountains – in short, a rural paradise. The accommodation varies from double-rooms to apartments all of them uniquely decorated, and though rustic, are very well equipped, with all rooms benefitting from a real wood-burning stove and air-conditioning. Most rooms also have internet access. There is also a restaurant, a communal swimming pool, and a large communal area with TV facilities. If you wish to explore a bit more of the history of the region during your stay, than nearby Ronda (and its famous Moorish bridge) is close to hand.
In a beautiful Southern Spanish settings, amidst Centenary Oaks (private 200 acres) all family has the possibility to enjoy from the aroma of wild lavanda, rosemary and thyme, and also the wild birds and deers you might see on your countryside walks. The immediacy of the natural national parks of Sierra de Las Nieves, Sierra de Grazalema and the natural park of Los Alcornocales make this a privileged city in terms of animal and plant species.
