Spas in Andalucia |
Spain & Andalucia |
Spas in AndaluciaThere was a time when the only concession to health a hotel had to offer was a poorly equipped gymnasium and perhaps a tiny swimming pool not much bigger than a bath. But times have changed, and now hotels (especially five star ones) provide whole centres devoted to health and relaxation, normally in the form of a spa. Historically, the term ‘spa’ is actually derived from the name of a Belgian town called “Spa”, where illnesses were treated by drinking the natural spring water that was sourced close by, and was said to be rich in iron. These days it’s become a far more generic term, meaning well-being derived from healthy treatments. Whirlpools, Jacuzzis, sea weed wraps, and bathing is sea salt water, are just some of the activities and treatments available. Most spas also offer what some would consider to be somewhat alternative treatments – including different forms of massage and natural oil therapy. In Andalucia in southern Spain, some of the most well-known spas are situated within luxury hotels, such as the Guadalpin in Marbella, Las Dunas Beach in Estepona, the Polly Mar Spa within the Kempinski Resort Hotel (also in Estepona) and the Byblos Hotel in Mijas Costa (also now part of the Guadalpin chain). Within these venues you can find almost anything to do with health and well-being, including hydrotherapy, aromatherapy, holistic treatments, Turkish baths, jet-spray massage, and UVA solarium treatments. |
