Fitness centres in Andalucia:Once there was a time when your local gymnasium was the only place to go if you wanted to lift some weights – strange, seedy, badly equipped places, where steroids, dodgy drink supplements, and muscle maniacs were the order of the day. They were intimidating places to say the least. But then all that changed in the 1980s, with the rise of the fitness centre, where people like you and I could go and indulge our ‘get fit’ fantasies to our heart’s desires. Places where women were also welcome as well as men (doubling the market at a stroke) and where other services were encouraged and not just regarded as strange add-ons.For example, these days a fitness centre usually offers aerobics classes, yoga, pilates, nutritional healthy food, a crèche for your kids maybe, television channels and headphones available on the very step-machine you are working out on, beauty treatments, and a whole lot more… t’s certainly a world away from what these kinds of places used to be, and on the Costa del Sol, they’ve certainly stretched this expanding market to the limit. Fitness centres like the Oxigeno chain, offer the most modern facilities available, and its Marbella branch has become very popular in southern Spain, and on the Costa Blanca there are also many to choose from, such as Sawyers Centro de Fitness in Denia. The latter boasts an indoor swimming pool with a retractable roof, spa and health suite, fitness shop and therapy treatment rooms. Meanwhile, the famous David Lloyd leisure chain has taken a step into Spanish market with its first club in Barcelona, with possibly more to follow. It’s certainly a market that goes hand in hand with the warm climate and generally healthier lifestyle that you’d expect in Spain. |
