Alternative Treatments in Andalucia
The growth of ‘alternative’ treatments has not escaped Spain, as conventional medical science continues to be challenged by other less proven therapies. Nonetheless, patients often report improvements to their health, despite the criticism of ‘normal’ science. Such therapies include aromatherapy, acupuncture, feng shui, homeopathy, reflexology and reiki. Of course, there will never be any ‘proof’ that any of these things work, as once you start trying to prove them scientifically, you are already missing the point – at least that’s what the alternative treatment fans will say.
Nonetheless, these kinds of therapies are widely available across the Costas, complimenting the general feeling of well-being that residents feel by living in a warmer climate. To give you an idea of what you are getting into, here is a short explanation of the most commonly used alternative treatments:
Aromatherapy is the use of concentrated oils from plants to create a feeling of physical and mental well-being.
Acupuncture is a Chinese treatment involving piercing the skin with fine needles to unblock the ‘channels’ in the body, often where there is pain.
Feng Shui – this is basically re-organising the material things in your house (like furniture for example) into areas more conducive the relaxing living.
Homeopathy – more difficult to explain, but essentially a method of encouraging your body to naturally ‘work through’ an illness, with an emphasis on ‘balance’ rather than using conventional medicines which fight against your body.
Reflexology – putting pressure points on areas of the feet to create positive effects elsewhere on the body.
Reiki – this is a treatment related to your ‘life force’ and is thus one of the less understood of all alternative therapies, though many patients do report beneficial results. |
