Golf Courses in Andalucia
The standard of golf courses in Spain are generally excellent, and usually not far from an airport. Probably one of the most famous on the Costa del Sol is the Valderrama complex, situated near San Roque near Gibraltar. Famous, because it’s been home to the Volvo Masters for several years, which in 2007 celebrated its 20th anniversary, becoming the longest-running single sponsorship golf event in Europe. It has attracted some of the world’s top European golfers, including Colin Montgomerie, Justin Rose, Lee Westwood, Bernhard Langer, and of course Spain’s Seve Ballesteros and Miguel Angel Jiménez (who was born in Malaga). The course itself was designed by Robert Trent Jones Snr, and in 1997 hosted the 32nd Ryder Cup, which was won by the European team. In 1999 and 2000, Valderrama hosted the first two World Golf Championships, the first of which was won by Tiger Woods. Elsewhere, the Costa del Sol is well blessed with challenging courses, like Los Flamingos, Mijas Golf, Aloha Golf, Marbella Golf and Country Club, La Quinta, Rio Real, Santa Maria, Estepona Golf, and La Duquesa, to name but a few. |
