October news of Spain and upcoming events

Starting with the rainiest autumn in the province of Malaga for several years
There hasn't been such a rainy October since 2003. That was the last time that it wasn't necessary to restrict water usage. The rainfall data for October gives a ray of hope in the face of the drought period of the last four years. Yes, no barbecues for us this month.

This month Marbella’s new urban development plan (PGOU) was provisionally approved by the Town Hall, reopening the debate regarding the pros and the cons of the revised document.

Remember this name: it is called Wimax. A concept similar to Wi-Fi but with better cover and bandwidth. It offers complete coverage over a radius of up to 48 kms and speeds of 70 Mbps.

In November, Malaga  will become the first city in Europe to use the Wimax technology, and only the second place in the world after the American state of Oregon

Ryanair has begun the winter season with the launch of 3 new routes between Malaga and the UK, expected to carry an extra 240,000 passengers every year. The first new link to start running was between Malaga and Glasgow Prestwick in Scotland. followed by its first of regular Ryanair flights between the Costa del Sol and London Stanstead. Finally November 6th will see the first flights run by the company between Malaga and Edinburgh.

The Town Hall in Roses, Girona is organising a workshop for youngsters on how to use a vibrator. The course will start from basics where the over 18’s will be shown how to make their own vibrator from recycled materials. Councillor of Education in Roses Town Hall, said that what seems like a joke in fact can hide much more serious problems such as unwanted pregnancies.

Costa del Sol´s companies received the Costa del Sol Business Awards. These prestigious Awards where granted by the Andalusian Government at the Foreign Residents Business Day held in Marbella. The event was organized by the Regional Government (Junta de Andalucia) through the Marbella Business Support Center. Right, a look now at some of the events coming up in November here in Spain, that we at Solchannel are happy to recommend to you!

Yes, and as the world of golf sends its best wishes to Spanish maestro Seve Ballesteros, we bring you the news that the Volvo Masters tournament will be held at Valderrama near Sotogrande, for the last time from the 1st to the 4th of the month. The prestigious event is likely to be switched to Dubai next year.

Elsewhere this November, there’s a Latin American film festival in Huelva from the 15th to the 22nd, including movies from Colombia, Chile, and Brazil – catering to a growing south American foreign resident community here in Spain.

And Jazz fans are well catered for this month, with major festivals taking place in  Madrid and Granada and almeria . The Granada one is particularly good, as the musicians don’t just play in official venues, but also in the streets and bars of the town. Makes for a great atmosphere!

Meanwhile, for the sporty amongst you, the streets of Benidorm are taken over by foreign residents on the 23rd of November, when the Benidorm marathon gets underway.
Yes, the race follows public roads and long stretches of Benidorm’s beaches, and also public squares throughout the town. It really is a great spectacle, and for once the locals can have a good gawp at the foreigners at play.

And many thousands of those foreigners own property here in Spain, so if you’re thinking of giving your pad a makeover, you can check out the Beautiful Living España interiors exhibition at the Palacio de Congresos in Marbella between the 28th and 30th of November.

That’s about it for this month. Join us again next month for your regular fix of Spanish news. You know it makes sense! Bye bye!
