Ronda is a historic town and with a unique situation.
Located on both sides of a steep river gorge (known as El Tajo), Ronda’s narrow bridge joins Old Ronda with New Ronda. The town’s high position means the views of the surrounding countryside are excellent and contemplating them from the bridge is top of things to do in Ronda.
Ronda is famous for being an authentically Andalucian town – whitewashed houses with wrought-iron grills and balconies are de rigueur throughout the town. Many historic Ronda properties have stunning patios. There are several attractive mansions, some of which you can visit and others are Ronda restaurants or hotels.
Like many Andalucia destinations, Ronda has a bullring and it’s claimed that bullfighting (or at least the modern rules) was invented in Ronda. Even if you’re not a fan of this typical Spanish tradition, the bullring and bullfighting museum are well worth a visit.
Ronda is a small town so this is one of the Andalucia tourist destinations that can be done in a day, but if you want to stay longer, there’s a good choice of luxury accommodation in Ronda as well as boutique hotels. Malaga airport is the nearest to Ronda and travel from Malaga to Ronda takes around 90 minutes.
Ronda’s surroundings are well worth a visit and include a long list of Andalucia white villages – Grazalema, Pujerra, Gaucín... – as well as some of the most beautiful countryside in Spain.
Things to See and Do in Ronda
Palaces Galore: Visit one of Ronda’s palaces, some of the most elegant in any Andalucia travel destination – the Mondragón Palace and Marqués de Salvatierra Palace are two of the best.
Carriage Trip: Be a proper tourist and take a carriage ride round Ronda to soak up the atmosphere – a different world to the Costa del Sol.Take the Stairs: Ronda’s Casa del Rey Moro has a water mine – the only one in the Andalucia region – and to get to it, you need to go down 300 steps, right down to the river at the bottom of the gorge.
Take to the Skies: Take a hot balloon ride and see the Ronda countryside from above
Cheers! Salud!: Try some of Ronda’s exquisite local wines at the Ronda Wine Museum Be Adventurous: Go on an adventure in Ronda’s spectacular countryside, ideal for walking, climbing, mountain biking and caving |
