Benahavis is a stunning, quaint village which has managed to retain it's bohemian, charming feel throughout the years. With lots of gourmet restaurants and tapas bars to choose from, Benahavis is the perfect retreat away from the hustle and bustle of Marbella.
Benahavis is a traditional white wash village like so many in Andalucia – located literally 15 minutes from Marbella, it’s incredible how close it is to glitzy Puerto Banus and yet has managed to retain a real country village feel.
Beautifully set in between the lush mountains of the Southern face of the Serrania de Ronda, with various rivers running alongside it, it is known as a culturally, rich town, with many artists taking residence here from as far back as the 60’s not to mention the highest concentration of gourmet restaurants in the area. You’ll find both typical and international eateries, tapas bars and charming boutique hotels.
Regardless of the time of year, it’s always a perfect getaway for those who live on the coast whether for a nice country walk or a meal of local specialities such as lamb, pork or fish washed down with a glass of Rioja.
The name Benahavis actually means “Sons of the Abyss” which was given to the village upon it’s creation by the Moors in the 10th century – originally built as a fortification it played an important part in the battles between the various arab kings in Andalucia – the castle walls offer views of over 100 kilometres of Spanish shoreline as well as the African coast. The Christian era started in 1485 with Benahavis becoming independent from Marbella 87 years later.
Benahavis is also a great destination for the more active. With 9 golf courses out of the 60 on the Costa Del Sol, this is certainly the perfect location for teeing off. Trekking, canyoing & cycling are all options to behold the spectacular views.
One of the idyllic spots of Benahavis is Lovers Pool on the road up to Benahavis. Before the damn was constructed this was a beautiful rock pool surrounded by lush vegetation although if there’s water in the stream It’s still worth a visit. Legend has it that a bride to be, bathed herself here and was sucked under by the strong whirlpool. Her betrothed dived in after her and consequently also died – but don’t let that put you off! Benahavis is a great place to visit regardless of the time of year!
