Playa Los Lances is one of Southern Spain's most unspoilt, virgin beaches. Located a short drive from Tarifa town, you can either cyle or drive the 5km from the centre of the pueblo. Backed with lush vegetation and lagoons, the dunes and pine trees provide shelter from the winds which can be very strong on certain days. Like other beaches in Cádiz coast sand in white, water is clear, waves are wild and the whole scenary is stunning. Surfers are part of this atmosphere all the year round, it has long been the best place for winsurfers in Europe, kitesurfers usually dot the ocean making this the perfect spot to people watch.
The Playa de los Lances, in the province of Cadiz, is undoubtedly one of the most stunning beaches in the Andalucia. Located a few kilometres west of the centre of Tarifa, where one can find a vast spectrum of hotels, bars & restaurants, the area is within the Estrecho Natural Park which runs from Algeciras to Bolonia.
What makes this beach particularly special is that it is on a geographic crossroad - the Mediteranean converges with the Atlantic nearby and Africa meets Europe just 16km away. On a clear day you would think you could swim across the straits but sadly this area is known to receive many Cayuco´s – boats transporting illegal immigrants.
Playa de los Lances has two rivers that run parallel to the shoreline, creating two lagoons surrounded by lush vegetation making these marshlands an oasis for hundreds of bird species and animals. This is a prime location for bird watching, especially in spring and autumn as its proximity to the straits of Gibraltar put it on the migratory route of our feathered friends.
And if you’ve got your binoculars with you, don’t forget this is not only a good place for checking out flora and fauna, it’s also a hotspot for kite surfers – yes I highly recommend it to the ladies!
Whilst kids will have a great time exploring, beware as the emerald sea can often have deceptively strong currents and don’t forget to bring a sun umbrella or tent to protect you from the strong rays and wind.
The beach is made up of fine, white, sugar like sand and is backed up by sand dunes – often a godsend on a windy day.
Be sure to bring your sandwiches, drinks and sun protection with you as there are no chiringuitos on this stretch of virgin beach although if you’re feeling energetic, take a short walk to Arte & Vida’s chill out lawn, and enjoy a refreshing Mojito on one of their Balinese style sofa’s…
Playa Los Lances in Tarifa, Cadiz is clearly a top mecca for Kitesurfers, sunseekers and beach bums alike!
