The small seaside town of Almuñécar is in the heart of the Tropical Coast and just 80km from the two cultural cities of Granada to the north and Malaga to the west, both with international airports.

With a population of more than 25,000, Almuñécar has a year-round pleasant climate. Winters are perfect – mild and dry – and summers warm and sunny.

With a mountain backdrop and looking onto the Mediterranean, Almuñécar sits on a hill between two rivers. Agriculture is important – this fertile land is perfect for tropical fruits. Fishing is also a big industry along with tourism, developed without spoiling the area’s natural beauty.

History
You can see traces of Almuñécar’s first inhabitants in the Phoenician and Roman remains and the 16th century Moorish Castle dominates one side of the town on the Peñón del Santo.

Old town
The town itself is typically Andalucian with winding streets, geranium-covered balconies and small sunny squares. Attractions here include the Encarnación church and the archaeological museum.

Beaches
Down on the beach, the 19km of coastline has spectacular cliffs, small coves and long stretches of shingle. For diving enthusiasts, there’s the best underwater scenery in southern Spain and families will love the AquaTropic waterpark at Velilla beach.
